Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE), an agency under the Local Government Department. Directorate of Public Health Engineering was established in 1935 with responsibility for development of public health through safe water supply. Later in 1954, the responsibility of providing sanitation services was added to it. After the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, the government first laid emphasis on rehabilitation of the destroyed water supply and sanitation systems and then started establishing new infrastructure through the Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) to improve the safe water supply and sanitation system in Mymensingh. Public Health Engineering continues to provide services to the people of Mymensingh by developing safe water supply and sanitation systems in the rural and urban areas of Mymensingh district as per the annual allocation of various projects. Moreover, almost every year this department works in coordination with the administration to alleviate the plight of the victims during floods and other disasters. In the past 3 years, 1521 water sources of various technologies have been installed in the rural areas of Mymensingh district. At that time, Mymensingh Municipality also constructed and supplied 45 producer tubewells, 169 km transmission and distribution pipe lines, 2 high water reservoirs, 170 community latrines, 50 public toilets and 4504 low-cost sanitary latrine sets in other upazila.
